Stretching and Yoga Benefits By Cheryl Greenfield

Move More Freely

While your goal may be to reach your toes, flexibility is only one aspect of stretching.

In fact, there are many types of stretching:

Static
According to the journal ‘Medical Science in Sports and Exercise,’ static stretching is best-performed post-workout to speed up recovery time and reduce the buildup of lactic acid.

Static stretches are held for at least 15 seconds, making it ideal for your post-workout recovery.

Dynamic
Dynamic stretching is the gradual lengthening of muscles through repetitive motion.

Dynamic stretches are designed for pre-workout warm-ups with the goal being to stretch the muscles you are about to put to use.

Active
During active stretching, you actively move one muscle group to stretch another. Active stretches are most commonly used during activity or workout warm up.

Passive
Passive stretching requires an external force accomplished through partner stretches, using stretching accessories, and/or just using gravity to assist your stretch. Passive stretches improve flexibility and are best during a post-workout cooldown.

All stretches are either static or dynamic AND active or passive.

Reap the Advantages

We all are aware that stretching is important, but why?

Results you can feel:

Energy Boost
When you hit that afternoon wall, a few simple stretches will increase blood flow throughout the body and brain to provide that quick pick-me-up.

Range of motion
Improving range of motion relieves stiff muscles and joints to ease pain associated with tightness.

Improve your form
Get the most out of your workout by utilizing proper form as when everything is properly aligned; you’ll get the most out of your workout.

Reduce injury
Lean, loose muscles are less likely to be injured than tight, rigid muscles.
